The construction of two new blocks in Hungary’s only nuclear power plant in Paks, will create 4,500 new jobs and including the services sector it will add 7,000 work places, said the President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Tolna county.

Hungary agreed with Russia on 14 January that Russia’s state-owned Rosatom will build two new reactors in the power plant in Paks, a town about 100 km south of Budapest on the Danube, for which Moscow will extend a EUR 10 billion loan. The agreement stipulates that the share of local suppliers can be as high as 40%.

Sándor Fischer said Rosatom informed the businesses of Tolna county in early February about the ways they may take part in the project. The president of the chamber said mostly construction companies and those manufacturing reinforcing bars are sought after.

Fischer said it will not be easy for local companies to reach the 40% ratio in supplying the project because they will have to meet national security standards, must have adequate capacities and employees that are masters of their trade.

“The best of the skilled workers of the construction sector already work abroad,” he said, adding that bringing them back would be possible only if they are offered high pays.
